It is in some countries. I think it should be illegal in all countries. I drive a lot and almost every time I see someone driving like an idiot, they are on their cell. It happens so much that it isn't funny. There may be some emergency situations where it would be very helpful to talk on the phone, but the people who choose to do so should be prepared to pay fines. At least people could use other methods like headphones or a dashboard set-up. I definitely think that talking on a phone, holding it to one's head while driving, should be illegal and fined. Instead of focusing on the fact that they're driving a heavy chunk of metal that can easily kill people, they're focused on a conversation.

I think it should be illegal in a majority of situations, but there is no way to differentiate between true emergency situations and stupid reasons. So therefore, it should be illegal. If you need to talk on the phone - pull over. Even talking on a headset distracts your mind from the road, just being in a conversation with another person in the car is distracting sometimes - but then where do you draw the line? Yes, the headsets are slightly improving your ability to drive but there have been studies done that prove that just being in a conversation with anyone is distracting. There is no clear solution to that problem, but I do believe it is illegal and people abusing it should be punished, especially so when a terrible accident occurs because of their negligence.

In the beginning, I had no real opinion on this.
But after seeing some very close calls by folks yaking away on a phone and totally oblivious to anything around them.....yep I agree that it should be illegal.

When did we get to the point that we think we are so important that we need a phone all the time anyway?

Children in my area as young as 10-11 years old? Please!

I can see when you are someone who works away from home....when you are a child(age within reason) away with friends or perhaps on a trip.
An elderly person with medical needs.

But most of us are just keeping up with the Joneses.

I have been amazed at some of the personal conversations that I have been made privy to, without desiring to, thanks to some yaking female on a cell phone.
And the language you hear!

Let's get real folks and be much safer!!!

Here in the USA, each state makes it own regulations. I live in NY State, where it is illegal to talk on cell phones while driving. But everyone still does it!

Absolutely.
Every one of us can cite situations in which drivers on cells are totally focused on the call, and are paying little attention to driving.
Driving takes more skill. It seems every time i get in my car, I get behind one of these idiots who is blocking the street, sitting at green lights, failing to use signals, and hanging far behind traffic.

I also object to rolling boom boxes! They are such a nuisance.

Yes, I have had far too many close calls on the Freeway from people talking on their phones...they drift into my lane, then give me a dirty look if I honk my horn! I would like to strangle a few of them. I have actually seen women putting on make-up while driving at 70 miles an hour, people reading newspapers on the Freeway, you name it, I have seen it. People do NOT multitask nearly as well as they think they do. Good luck

I live in Connecticut, it is illegal here. There is a heavy fine if you get caught talking on your cell phone. They take it from you and then they give you a ticket of 150.00 dollars.

Talking on a cellphone while driving is the equivalent of driving while under the influence. It should definitely be illegal.

Most definately! It is illegal on the military bases , at least it is on Fort Hood, and I wish it was illegal all over the country.
