We live in a high desert climate, and our home does not have a sprinkler system installed? We've been using this big fan sprinkler, but it doesn't quite seem to cut it. Are there any other good (and relatively inexpensive) options out there?

Soaker hoses may be a better option. The water won't evaporate.

You could also look into the moving sprinklers that have rotating heads and can be adjusted to water just a small area.

Check the hardware stores and see of they have a stick like bar that you can attach to your hose. It is the same idea as the fan but may cover more areas. I live in a desert climate and our built in sprinklers are on for like one hour at a time...

In a desert climate you should install a bubbler type system. Sprinklers will waste water due to evaporation. Maybe soaker hoses will work for you. In Vegas I used colored rocks for grass. No water needed.

Watering lawns in a desert climate is a waste of money and water. Around the edges of the lawn, dig up the grass and start planting drought tolerant/native shrubbery. Continue doing this until you have cut the size of your lawn in half or so, and then try soaker hoses. We also live in the southern California desert.

well the best times to water your lawn are in the early morning or at night (when it's not so hot) this way means it is not a waste of water and gives the soil time to drink/swallow the water and can then give the grass the neut rants it needs during the day.

You are probably doing it at the wrong time of day. Try early morning just around sunrise only, and put out a pie plate. when the plate is full, its time to move it to another area, or turn it off.
