My school has this program called vision. It helps them keep an eye on what we are doing while on the computers. But everything is blocked so what's the point of watching us. Right?

It's their connection, they have every right to monitor your activity. If you're using THEIR computer (and access), you have no privacy. Not to mention you're on Government property. :)

If you want privacy, you need to pay for your own Inet access.

Just wait until you get a real job. They watch you there too.

At the end of the day, they are doing you a favour by letting you use the internet. They are under no obligation to let you go online - it is not your _right_ - therefore it is not an infringement of your rights to monitor your activity. They do this because there is always going to be someone who abuses the privilege (it sounds to me like it could be you!), so not all users can be trusted to use it responsibly and honestly. Therefore they watch you.

It is worth noting that they haven't blocked EVERYTHING - there are new sites every day and it's an impossible to list them ALL in their blocking software.

Also, it's not just porn that they don't want you looking at - what about religious extremist websites? Terrorist websites? Hacking websites? Software piracy websites? Porn isn't the only thing that a network administrator doesn't want school children looking at.

"Don't bite the hand that feeds you" - ever heard that one?

Rawlyn.

I don't think it goes against any privacy rights so long as they tell you they're doing it. If they do, then you can have no expectation of privacy.

It can also help prevent bad things (such as suicide or the Dawson College shooting in Montreal) by monitoring what the kids are saying, and reacting before it gets out of hand.

Overall, so long as they tell you they're monitoring you, I think it can solve more problems than it creates.

it is probably a pert of their liability. They can not be sued for you going on porn sites if it is blocked and they monitor your every move. If you want to do fun things on the comp then do it at home. School comps are for School

Absolutely not! It is the school's responsibility to only allow access to their computers to be used in the way they intended students to use them. They have a responsibility and liability issue.

It is their computer and their bandwidth. Get your own if you have a problem with it.

FYI: They probably rarely use it. The fact that it is there means that you self enforce the acceptable use policy. If they wanted to bust you, no one would know.

If something is blocked, you can be sure that somebody will try to get around it. They monitor to keep track of these people...and to make sure there's nothing they missed.
