If you doctor's said it's ok then i wouldn't worry. Most over the counter vitamin supplements that are formulated specially for pregnant women contain your recommended daily intake of iron though, so I'd just take those if you are worried. I think I heard somewhere that too much iron can affect the baby, but I think we're talking huge amounts here, not just what you'd get from a regular supplement. And the others have a point about the black poo - believe me it's not pleasant! Oh, and in case you're tempted, it's best to avoid eating liver (yuck) for iron - it contains high levels of vitamin A which CAN be harmful to the baby. Remember you can always ask for a second opinion if you're not happy with what your doctor has said.

You can buy iron tablets at the chemist so if you do need them you can get hold of them. However, if the doctor says that you don't need them, it is best to take that advice. Taking iron tablets can have an adverse affect on your guts and your bowel movements so you might not want to take them if you don't need to.

My advice is to listen to the experts.

Let us go back to the women of the past(back in the olden days),i do believed that they were no doctor, they were no prenatal check up and they don't even know what was iron tablet's for,and they gave birth to many normal and fine children including our ancestors............you don't have to worry so much,i think worrying will cause harm to your baby not because of not taking an iron tablet.

Well if your body is not in need of Iron then they will not prescribe it.
My GP told me when I had my girls that too much iron or vitamin D could be very dangerous to both yourself and your baby as it can actually act like a poison if too much is absorbed-
If this is still true, as things do change, then that would most probably be why they have not given it to you.

I hope you have a safe and happy birth :o)

If you don't need them, nothing will happen if you don't take iron tablets. If you take them when you don't need them, you could overdose on the iron tablets. Too much iron is a very bad thing.

Be thankful because it means you don't need to put anything into your system. Iron tablets can make you constipated anyway and with everything else you handle in pregnancy, that's one thing you can do without!

If the blood work you had done came back normal then maybe you dont need them. I needed to take an iron supplement with my last pregnancy since i was slightly anemic, but did not need to take them with this pregnancy? Not to worry.

The doctor knows best. Not all women need iron tabs. You should be glad that you don't. They cause horrible costipation. You don't want too much iron in your body.. too much is poison to your baby. Your body must be producing it normally. Good luck to you and congrats!

Your iron will be checked through out your preg. Your doc knows best. If your iron level is high enough maybe you just don't need them.
Prenatal pills have iron in them..

That just means you have sufficient iron in your blood and do not need a supplement.
Iron supplements are not essential pregnancy fayre, it's just common for women to become anaemic and require supplements during pregnancy.
