Yes. I was diagnosed years ago with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, bordering Panic Disorder. I was put on Paxil, which didn't work long because of the Epilepsy medication I have to take. I now take 5HTP (a natural supplement which my doctor is happy that I have found) on a daily basis. This helps combat some of the "regular" anxieties I have. When I feel I am nearing a Panic Attack due to higher stress in my life, I take Xanax, which was prescribed by the same doctor for occasional use only. BTW, I was diagnosed with the Anxiety Disorder long before the Epilepsy, so it is not a side effect of it. And, I have heard that up to 35% of the population has an Anxiety Disorder, which makes them more susceptible to Panic Attacks, though not all choose to be treated.

I had severe panic attacks a while back because I felt so out of control of all the things that were going on in my life. I decided natural remedies were for me: eating a balanced diet, EXERCISE, (esp. walking), drinking plenty of fluids, getting enough rest, taking time with my Creator, staying close to an understanding friend.... you know, all the "simple" yet potent stuff. Once i understood what panic attacks were, at the onset of one, i would say to myself, "Ok, this is just another panic attack. It might last an hour or so. It makes me FEEL bad, but it's not going to really do any harm..." and, when i began to talk to myself that way, the attack would subside almost immediately.

Yes, panic attacks come and go. Its not a pleasant thing to experience. I always have been told to use a paper bag. Breathe into it. Helps a lot.

Yes, years ago. A good medication for me was Effexor-XR. It works great for depression and anxiety, both which sometimes are linked to panic attacks. Ask your psychiatrist if it might be right for you. Here is a link to their website:

and good luck!

Your doctor is right, and there is nothing wrong with taking the occasional anti-anxiety agent to help in times of stress.
