I think that camping in a RV is not only self defeating in the principle of going outdoors, but socially irresponible (2 mpg). Who thinks "camping" in national parks with RVs should be made illeagle?

OK I agree with you to a point. For healthy, young people it takes the adventure out of camping and I don't see the point. I personally like to "rough it" as well, and I think that's how you really experience nature. You can't really do that from your 60-foot RV with a/c, satellite TV and an indoor pool. I mean, come on, some of these things are nicer than my house, in fact they are a house. And no, I wouldn't consider dwelling inside of one of these rolling mansions "camping".
On the other hand, as was mentioned earlier, for older folks or people with special needs, who still want to experience a taste of the outdoors, an RV can be just the ticket. Plus, they are not used only for camping--my older aunt and uncle love to take long trips and stay for extended amounts of time, often they just drive their RV to their destination, and park at an "RV" park. The "RV parks" are often in the middle of the city, and it's not meant to be about camping. For them it's about being able to stay in the area for only a few dollars a night, and it's sort of a social club as well--they enjoy hanging out with all the other RV'ers.

I think that if you have the bucks to go out in an RV....go for it. I do think that Park's should make them buy a permit and should have the right to fine any "camper" RV or Tent, if they leave the site and not clean up after themselves, fire pit properly maintained, no garbage, no dumping, ect... A lot of elderly, or physically challenged people cannot pitch a tent and sleep in bag's on the ground, but still enjoy the outdoors. I think it's a great way to travel. I do believe that they should be made to take a driver's test before getting on the road, they need to know how to handle a large vehichle without endangering others. Have you ever seen those little pop up camper's for motorcycles....they are awesome! I don't believe you have the correct mileage on the RV's , they have improved on this. I personally don't think that they are hurting anything, think about it, if a person loves' to camp you would have to think that they are going to care for "Mother Earth"!

If you sleep in a RV... it is not camping. Its RV-ing. Nothing wrong with it, just don't call it "camping". (and as long as the rv park is far away from the real campers) I have been camping where we didn't even have a tent. Just tied some rope up between a couple of trees and threw our car cover over it and anchored it with some rocks we found. Slept in our sleeping bags on a cold hard ground. For breakfast the next day, we ate our leftover hot dogs because the raccoons made off with everything else (lol) It was cold, we were hungry, it was fantastic!

I think RV's are a great idea. If you have ever been camping in a tent and heard a lynx in the middle of the night, you want as much between you and what ever is out there. I think RV's are a great way to travel. Bless those that like to rough it in tents. Not me anymore.

RVs enable lots of people who otherwise wouldnt be able to camp to experience the great outdoors. You want me to tell my grandma to sleep on the ground in a tent. I didn't think so. Also most RV's get alot better mileage that what you said and even if they didn't as long as the people driving them can afford the fuel then what business of yours is it to tell them they cant go where they want to.

I don't think it should be be outlawed some people can't take sleeping on the ground.....Besides a vacation is for people to enjoy so why does it matter to you what a person camps in....Why not camp like they did in the old days with a blanket on the ground...Out with the open sky and stars...Tents where made for a luxury fisrt so we didn't have to sleep out like that....But even these days when people camp they either take blow up beds, gas stoves. store bought food, a cooler, TV's, and even some bring cell phones...So if one thing should be out law so should all of that...And you should build your own fire and catch your own food and sleep in a sleeping bag under the stars if you want a trur camping experience...

I think it's stupid and just another example of the decadence of our society with no regard to the environmental impact. If somebody really needs a bed to sleep in while "camping", most parks rent out cabins. State parks around me rent cabins for like $27 a night with fireplaces and everything. I imagine national parks offer something similar.

Some people require more comforts than others. It's not fair for you to judge others just because they aren't as "tough" as you are.

Personally, I've slept under a tarp in pouring rain and really hiked and camped out, building my own fires from scratch, but I wouldn't expect everyone else to do that.... I find it rewarding, but many others would find it uncomfortable, and I respect that.
