The best things in life are free because the cost no money at all and have no monetary value. This is what the phrase implies.

Everyone actually does have these very things. It's just that for each person, those "best" things may be different.

What one must do is find those "best" things that bring happiness and joy to your life and realise that they are there for the taking. Funny thing is, for some, money IS one of the best things in their life and it brings them joy. There is nothing wrong with that, really, but others perfer to be altruistic and such.

Bottom line: What makes you happy is what makes YOU happy. Hopefully, those things/ideas/people are available to you. If not, do what you can to find them.

The Dude is happy that White Russians are 1/2 off from 6-9pm and the 4th one is free.

Family is free, and the love of a good and supportive family is one of the best things in life. You don't (normally) have to pay to get a family, but still not everyone has one. There are many reasons why you would not have one, old age and no children, being orphaned and too young to have your own kids.
Or, maybe your family is not such a great one, after all, some of the most notorious killers in history were parents too!
Another answer is that maybe you are not yet aware of the pute happiness you can get from the simplist of things and are still looking for it in nightclubs, alcohol, one night stands and money?Let's just hope that most people have the foresight to realise what things can make them happy and to seek them out before they are too old to have time to appreciate them!

The best things ARE for free!! just think of all these oxygen, personality, yourself etc! and the best of them all...salvation by Jesus-- God's own Son's life. all we need to do is accept it. I think the reason why not every has them is that they havent made the decision to accept them or are too materialistic that they cant see all the stuff around is perishable. deep things dont perish such as true love, kindness and sometimes even a memory of something like a smile..all for free.

Nothing in the world is free!

E.g.
You have to pay for water (water rates).
Freedom of speech is limited as you can get arrested for saying certain things.
Love isn't free as in a sense you have to sacrifice something to have and be loved.
Sunshine isn't free because there is a price to pay (not a literal £'s) like your health!
Good health is total bull- everytime you go into the sunshine, your skin gets damaged ever so slightly and healthcare isn't free because you have to pay community charge- which funds the NHS and other public servies.

You have to look around and consider what are the best things in life? Your bank balance or your health? Your car or surrounding nature? The sun rising every morning or being able to book a holiday in Canada? We all have those best things - you just have to learn to appreciate them.

Because people are so wrapped up in the stuggle to gain money, responsibility (power) and respect that they lose sight of what is really important.

We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us really happy is something to be enthusiastic about. - Charles Kingsley quote .

Supply and demand. The lower the price, the higher the demand.
Zero price = infinite potential demand = very short supply of best things.
