I press on the start button(bottom left hand corner) to bring up my programme menus and turn off computer button. All I get is a beep every time without letting me go any further.
Any suggestions please.

The only way you can powerdown is to hold the on/off button for 3 seconds or more. It will turn off, and you can then reboot to see if you have this problem still.
Alternatively, press ctrl, alt and delete at the same time, and select turn-off compueter there.

If your OS is Windows XP you should be able to tell the cause of the problem by looking in Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer and choosing the System Option.
Look at any entries reporting an error and click the associated link to Microsoft. It should start giving you a clue as to why the Turn Off option is not being displayed.

If its new, take it back. If not, sounds like you have a operating system problem that can most easily be fixed by:
1. backing up all your important stuff
2. re-installing windows (assume you got the cd??)
If you switch it off manually, without the operating system shutting it off, you will cause damage to your hard drive. So I recommend you do as ive suggested immeadiately!!

Use ctrl + alt + delete and select turn-off computer from there it should work.

go to task manager and from there you will be able to log off
