Well you can have the Yahoo Messenger and not use the new voice programs at all. But if you have issues with Messy 8.0 like most people here is a site where you can find the Older versions of Messenger. 7.0 works well. Unfortunately Yahoo has taken the versions older than 7 and deleted them.
Now if you don't want to use the new voice service because you have people on your friends list you won't be able to talk to anymore, I would suggest a 3rd party chat client. Like yazak or Yahelite. They have the older style voice protocol (none of this calling stuff) and they work well for chat especially. They are harder to boot and are more secure that yahoo messenger in chat rooms.
I hope this helped... God bless ya :D

You can use Yahoo and just ignore the voice feature. To get an older version without the voice ability, you want to search for version 7.0 or older. Just because the feature is there does not mean that you have to use it. As well, keep in mind that the newer versions are also plugging a lot of security holes.

I have REPEATEDLY tried to downgrade to my previous version, as the AT&T corrupts my older Kazaa program. But it appears to be impossible, they just keep reinstalling the newest version. I use yahoo messenger, and I will continue to look at the answers to this question, in hopes of finding a solution.
In other words, I don't think you can. (They SAY you can, but you can't).
[The newer version may "plug some holes" but it can also plug some holes that you don't want plugged!]
