Web design basics: Go to htmlgoodies.com and take a few free tutorial lessons. It will show you how to setup a basic web site. The next thing would be how to buy a domain name, a hosting website and then learn to upload your website to it. Once you have the very basics down, you can expand your learning to include flash, xlm, asp and other languages. Is it difficult? No, but time consuming, a lot of fun and somtimes frustrating. If you're not the learn on the go type, try taking some classes locally to see if you like it. Good Luck!

The best way to learn webdesign is to get the latest copy of Microsoft Front Page. This will allow you to just type a page, then look at the codes used to make it react the way that it does. You should do a search for proper HTML coding requirements and familiarize yourself with them. Designing a website, is like designing a crap load of webpages, where they all express different information, but have the same characteristics that show they are related. Hence the next page should look a lot like the first page, same colors, headers, footers, etc. Front Page does this by using themes. You can get another good free copy of an HTML Editor from Coffee Cup Software, and there are many lower end Free ones that you can get from http://www.download.com
As for doing this as a business, i will tell you from experience. You have to prove your capabilities long before you will attract a cold call customer. Get a site up that explains who you are, and show what you have accomplished by using your own site as a template. I do this using all of my own sites, as well as by running two servers from my home office. Want to get a looksee? Go to http://www.cortlandpc.com There is money to be made, but keep in mind that you are bidding on the job as a whole, and not price it out per page, etc. It is a never ending process to keep the information up to date for any clients you may get. I generally get free lodging for out of town work, all dinners, and about $100 plus expenses for an 8 hour day. Naturally, the time includes everything like eating so it is a lot like a union job.

I've been creating websites for people using a great hosting company that provides sitebuilder software so you don't need to know html although it does come in handy from time to time.

The hosting is part of my business which is free. You charge people to design the site and then they pay their own hosting bill. You receive a good commission from the monthly hosting. Now you've got income up front and residual income.
