It exists. It is located in the southern half of Nevada at Groom Lake (a dry lake). It is a secret military installation, that employs both military and civilian employees. The civilian staff mostly live in and around Las Vegas and fly in and out on a regular basis from Las Vegas-McCarren Int'l Airport.

Mostly what is believed to take place at Groom Lake is the development and testing of experimental air combat weapon systems. It is believed that the F-117A stealth fighter was tested there and based there until its existence became declassified.

Whether there are any alien UFOs there are alien remains as has been widely alleged, I think the odds are somewhere between zero and zero.

Yes, Area 51 is for real! Area 51 refers to a 4,687 square mile (roughly the size of Yorkshire) top secret US military base approximately 100 miles Northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada near Groom Lake. During the Cold War it was used to develop and test new spy planes mainly the U-2. The area was also used to test nuclear weapons. However the US government used to claims that it simply doesn't exist. If there is nothing there- why is there such high security?

In total, there have been over 900 atomic explosions in deserts. Most of them were below ground. Nowadays, the US government have a new cover story which is that Area 51 is simply used as a "bombing test site".....This is from an interesting link i've just found. Yes Area 51 exists.

Area 51, also known as Groom Lake, is a secret military facility about 90 miles north of Las Vegas. The number refers to a 6-by-10-mile block of land, at the center of which is a large air base the government will not discuss. The site was selected in the mid-1950s for testing of the U-2 spyplane, due to its remoteness, proximity to existing facilities and presence of a dry lake bed for landings. Groom Lake is America's traditional testing ground for "black budget" aircraft before they are publicly acknowledged. The facility and surrounding areas are also associated -- with varying levels of credibility -- with UFO and conspiracy stories. In 1989, Bob Lazar claimed on a Las Vegas television station that he had worked with alien spacecraft at Papoose Lake, south of Area 51. Since then, "Area 51" has become a popular symbol for the alleged U.S. Government UFO cover-up. [GC 8/96]

Its real. Its a R & D facility for top secret aircraft. EG&G special projects in the major contractor out there and their employees fly to work everyday from Las Vegas. Their is so much fact and fiction about what occurs out there that you will probably have trouble getting any legit answers to your questions. The fact is, even if the latest aircraft technology is being tested and nothing else, security is still going to be super tight and tresspassers are going to get into a world of trouble.
