When working this type of problem start by solving whats inside the parentheses () first then use that answer to solve the problem: 20 minus -5 = 25
49 divided by 25 = 1.96

step 1 -do what is in the parenthises
20 - 5 = 15
step 2 divide 49 by 15
which gives you 3.26666 only keep the 1st 6 , and put a line over it.
or if you want a fraction answer 3 and 4/15 ths.

Don't get confused when subtracting negative numbers. Always remember to always reverse the sign of the bottom number in a subtraction and add. This is where things get confusing. If I say to subtract 5 from 20 that would be the same as -5+20. If I say to subtract -5 from 20 that would be the same as 5+20.
Forget all you learned in the past about subtraction and think of it as adding with a negative number.
