For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'm sure in corporate america there may not be a difference, but if you are working in a grocery store or fast food joint in BFE, then there often is.

LOL my friends and I use to joke about this at my old job...as a non smoker I didn't get as much breaks as they did so I simply took a break with them anyway and they are like "what are you doing"? I say "taking a smoke break!" and they are like "well you dont' smoke!" and I say "yeah well lets pretend I do!" so yeah, go on a "smoke break" without actually smoking :)

I think laws vary by state, but in my state workers are allowed 10 or 15 min breaks, on in the morning and one in the afternoon. You don't have to take them. But it has been my experience that non-smokers just milk the clock in a different way than smokers. Smokers have a sense of guilt over actually going outside to puff away that they spend less time on personal phone calls, surfing the internet, etc. I'd be careful about pointing the finger, there's always more pointing back at you. I know some people abuse things, but people abuse the phone, internet and email just as much, probably more, than smokers abusing smoke time.

yes- and in a health care setting-it is stupid to smoke when you are trying to cure people of dseases resulting from smoking...but they go out an dget their breaks while we watch over the rest. They are off site, "gone" "poof" while if Im on a break Im immediately avail in case of emerg. and can still answer a phone, etc. Now I am refusing to watch over their charges for those types of breaks- a meal break OK.But guess what? Some employers are making smoking a taboo anywhere n the grounds including the cars! Employees or customers etc.I love it.

How do you figure we get more breaks. I am a smoker and I take one break in the morning and one in the afternoon. That would so not fly for me to take more than that. Not all smokers take advantage of breaks. Also most of those smokers who do take more breaks, only take about 5 mins at a time so really they are taking the same amount of time just a different way

I've actually done that! I don't smoke anymore, but I went and had a cig just so I could get another break.

Nonsmokers here take breaks when the smokers do. We just don't go to the cancer ward with them.

No, I'd rather have my health. I don't know of any business that allows smoker breaks.
