I THINK ITS FOR THE SAME REASON THAT EVERYONE SAYS "FINE THANKS" WHEN ASKED THE QUESTION HOW ARE YOU? FIRST I THINK PEOPLE TEND TO GIVE THE RESPONSE THEY THINK YOU WANT TO HEAR. SO MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THE REAL MEANING OF THE WORD LOVE, SO THEY TEND TO USE IT WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT, LIKE AUTOMATICALLY RESPONDING THANKS WHEN SOMEONE OPENS THE DOOR FOR YOU OR EXCUSE ME WHEN YOU SNEEZE, I THINK THAT PEOPLE SHOULD ONLY SAY WHAT THEY MEAN AND BE CARE FULL NOT TO ALLOW ANYTHING OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS THAT WILL TEAR DOWN OR INFLICT INTENTIONAL HURT ON SOMEONE. I'M SORRY THAT PEOPLE HAVE TOLD YOU THEY LOVE YOU AS A MATTER OF COURSE ALTHOUGH YOU KNEW THEY DIDN'T REALLY MEAN IT BUT TAKE HEART THE MORE OPEN AND HONEST YOU ARE THE MORE PEOPLE TEND TO BE WITH YOU.

I'd say that either they believe that they love you at the time when they say it, OR they just want to sleep with you, and think that the 'i love you' line will help them with that.

Maybe Because sayin 'i like you' is not deep and touching enuff.. and they can't go sayin "i like you but not so love you" .So they say "i love you" and hoping that someday they'll mean it.. (this answer is suitable for a gentleman who says it to u, and u know him long enuff..)
