What state are you in? Or country for that matter? I have worked in 7 different states from Oregon to Georgia and they all have different rules. There is a federal rule (can't rmember it) since every state usually gives you longer and more breaks than the rules says to. Why does it matter why don't you just work until it is done or utnil the opportune time to take a break. some places like restaurants just can't let you sit down and have a meal during the dinner rush.
I think it is you have to be schedualed for 6 hours to get a half hour break, if it is less than that all they have to give you is one 15 minute break.

In Texas, you must be given a 15min break after every 4 hours of work. In an 8-hour shift, you must be given a 30 minute food break. I would assume that the food break would happen a maximum of 4 hours into an 8 hour workday. The 15 minute breaks are considered 'paid' breaks. The 30 minute food break is 'off the clock'. Most companies are flexible with the food break policy but this is Texas state law.

The law requires six hours of work before you have to take a meal break. Therefore if you are working six hour or less shifts your employer does not have to give you a lunch break. Checdk on the postings in your employee lounge.

For a regular 8-hour work day, you can usually take a meal break a minimum of three hours after your start time, up to about five hours after your start time.
