Although the more proper terminology is cast wheels, mag wheels generally refer to wheels that are cast out of a single piece of metal, instead of being spoked (think motorcycles here) or having a wheel cover/hubcap.
And yes, "mag" came from the fact that most of the first ones were made from magnesium alloy.

Mag - magnesium. Mg (chemical symbol)
Why Mg? - it is lightweight. With advancement in science, we have come up with materials that are lot stronger and low weight.
Disadvantage of Mg? - Pure Mg can catch fire or burn easily.
Nowadays though - the wheels are Mg alloys (mixture of metals - main component is Mg). This is done mainly to reduce the fire hazard and also to increase strength.
