If I read this right, you are selling by owner. If that's the case, you simply MUST be there. Some people go to open houses strictly to steal small items such as jewelry and silver. Also, if you don't have a realtor, you're the best person to answer buyer questions regarding the home.
It's true though, having the owner present in a home makes me very uncomfortable when I'm looking to buy. I recently bought a home in Florida, and whenever the owner was present, I felt I should get out ASAP--it made me uneasy to speak freely. I wound up buying one that was represented by a realtor without the buyer present.
I'm also a realtor myself now, and would never sell alone. I prefer an arm's length transaction.

If you are selling your house yourself and do not have a listing agent then I would say that you need to be there. I wouldn't follow them around but someone would need to be there to answer questions about the sale. People are going to ask about the house itself, the neighborhood, schools, etc.
Of course you would need to have a sheet that has the properties picture and the basic info like square footage, how many bedrooms, baths, fireplace, decks, ask price... anything that would help to sell the property. That should answer most basic questions but during an open house either the listing agent or an associate would sit the open house. My wife would sit open houses for various realitors in her office.

If possible have someone there like a friend or family member that can answer questions for you. If you are there you may put off potential buyers. You will also be hearing a lot of comments about your house (both negative and positive) that will be a little hard to take. If you don't know of someone appropriate who would do a good job of greeting potential customers and answering their questions, then do it yourself. But, prepare yourself that it may be emotional for you.

My husband and I went to an open house while we were looking and were made to feel very uncomfortable by an owner that followed us through the entire place and stormed off angry when I mentioned that I would take the wallpaper down in the kitchen.

If your using a realtor, then no. Make sure it smells nice, usually some candles that smell like baking are good (makes it seem more homey). Clear out all the clutter. This includes closests, people will be looking in all the nooks and crannies. Par down on furniture and decorations to make it look bigger. Pay special attention to the front to make it look inviting and neat.

Last but not least leave. Let the realtor earn they're money. Make sure to ask for feedback after.

Good luck!

If you trust your agent (and I hope you do if you have given them the listing) then she/he can handle it. Buyers get nervous if the owner is home and may walk through very fast. Also sellers slip sometimes and say something that may shy the buyer away from the house. Your agent has knowledge, let them do their job and go take a couple of hours for yourself.
If you don't have a broker then get a friend that you can trust and maybe has knowledge of real estate to sit in for you. For the same reasons as above.

NO, it's bad form to be there. If someone is interested, you don't want them to feel pressured by knowing you're there... Just make sure it's clean and smells good.. trust me, if it smells like you're baking something, it will be more invting, maybe some candles and fresh flowers, too. In an an open house, your real estate agent will be there to answer any questions and accept offers.

No. It may make the prospective buyer uncomfortable. Also, the agent is the contact person for the sales of the property, and they should have more of an expertise in answering questions.

If doing this FSBO, of course you have to be there! Who else is going to answer questions about how old the roof is? Have you made up a flyer with info on it for people to take with them to refer to later?

I would never leave during a FSBO so we could come home to find that we don't have a TV anymore!
