He had suggested the abolition of slavery with the writing of the Declaration of Independence, stating that he had determined to emancipate his own slaves, which he never did. Later, he had suggested that slavery be phased out over time with the suggestion that all children of slaves born after some pre-determined date would be born free (probably completely unworkable for many, many reasons). In the end, when he died he still had many slaves which he bequeated in his will.

well he did own slaves, however, I don't know if it was a matter of supporting them per se. I think it was more just something everyone did. It seems completely inhumane and terrible now but back then it was just part of life. I'm sure in many years to come, some of things we think are normal now, people will wonder why we were so stupid and supported things like that.

Yes & no.

He was a man of his times...
He did not support slavery, but per the times, had them & used them accordingly.

He did have his estate free them though.

He owned them, so I would suspect he supported them. That was an acceptable way of life back then. Even whites were sold into slavery.

I believe he owned them. There have been rumors that he fathered a child with a slave, but the best evidence appears to suggest it was a relative, not him.

He made a lot of contributions to our understanding of civil liberties, but obviously he was far from perfect.
