It depends on the job, but when they do, they typically only check the current/last job. If it's a higher security job, they might do a more thorough check.

genreally, No, they do check if things start to go wrong because the references form part of your application so if they are false its grounds for instant dismissle.

I tend to give the reference a phone call.

I wouldn't agree that the higher the job the more they check. How do you think a CEO of a bank would feel if a new bank employer checked up on the CEO with thier previous work colleuges.

I've been asked many times if i'll be a reference but only one employer actually phoned me in 15 years.

the answer is ----- it depends ----- on the job and on the person.
we will always check references for (for example) a systems analyst, but not necessarily for a warehouseperson, unless we were concerned about something (maybe number of previous employments, a gap in the employment history, a short stay at a previous job, jobs listed dont *match* the person, etc, etc)

In know for a fact that many do not; however, this depends a great deal upon the job: for my current job references were checked very thoroughly. When my friend was trying to become a police officer you would not believe how meticulously his references were tapped for information.

most companies do check your references. How far they check depends on your first references check out and how big the job is.

depends on your record of employment. They may ring the reference's to check and its always better to have two good references to back you up! Its not worth it not to have someone as they may take it as a negative opinion of you

If it's serious employment they do, yes. I know, because I've had my references call me and tell me that someone called them to talk to them about a job I was taking - so, yes, employers do check references.

The company I work for certainly do. Not only by phone but a visit to a previous employer can also take place.

Only for first time job hunters who have no real experience... for others, they like to see the references listed on the resume but rarely if ever check on them...

It really does depend on the size of the company and your procedure, it is alwasy best to get good references, just in case. However remmeber that nobody is allowed to give a bad reference.
