There is a word that I have heard but can't think of right now. What do they call it when a police officer follows you around waiting for you to do something wrong? I know it, but it slips my mind at the moment. Its not legal, but some cops do it.

By definition the word you're looking for is entrapment, but the criteria you describe does not fit.Surveillance more closely fits what you describe as entrapment is baiting an individual to try to make them break the law.Entrapment will destroy a case if proven while surveillance is within the scope of many investigations

Someone has already given you one possibility, surveillance. The other possibility, and the reason the police follow someone around to begin with, is called profiling. In other words, cops have descriptions of people who fit suspected thieves, vandals, and the like. Profiling has come back to haunt officers and departments when they include entire ethnic groups in their list.

Thing is...you're talking about entrapment, but the true deffinition of this is when an officer or other law enforcement forces you to commit a crime you would not otherwise do. Waiting for you to do something wrong is not illegal. It's when they make you do something that you wouldn't normally do!

Are you thinking of Entrapment?
If so, that is not the definition. They do not follow you around waiting on you to do somethig wrong. Entrapment would be them making you do something you would not have done without them urging you to do it. Committing a crime you had no intent to commit until they pursued it with you.

just plain old following? I had a cop do that to me once. I turned onto a main street after stopping at a 3-way, he was sitting on the side of the street I turned onto, so he pulled a U turn, followed me, never turned his lights on, followed me to my house (right down the closest side street), and proceeded to follow me all the way back into my parking lot driveway (I lived in an apt. house), before he told me I didn't stop "long enough" at the blinking red light! Asked me if I knew what my brakes were! Mind you, this was 1am, there was no traffic around, and I HAD come to a complete stop, before going through the intersection. Obviously, as long as I stopped, there was no need to wait for invisible traffic! Guess he had nothing better to do. Ran out of donuts, maybe? lol
