by "historical" I mean that the time period in which the story takes place relates to ancient times like the roman empire, middle ages.... Novels such as Spartacus, Quo Vadis?, etc.

When authors wrote novels in the 19th century it was not called 'historical' it was a modern novel. Now in the 21st century these 19th century novels have become 'historical'

probably for the same reasons writers write historical fiction today--some people find history fascinating. Their interest in history leads them to imagine and create their own stories within the historical framework. Plus I think writers sometimes like writing "once upon a time" stories in which the reader can escape their present reality.
