I've been teaching for 20 years now, and when students ask "why" about some of the really idiotic rules of the English language, I just say, "Because the English language was actually created by a group of drunk monks one night. They wanted to create a language whose rules are so difficult to understand that practically no ONE ever really "gets it." This is one of those rules, so just live with it!" And then, of course, give a real answer!

actual 'the enormous undesirable wolf WHO got here out of the woodland'. To personify the wolf in this type isn't purely an exceptionally English way of writing, in spite of the undeniable fact that it makes it doubly frightening to the reader/listener!
