Male livebearing fish have elongated anal fins. It can be very hard to tell (or impossible until spawning) with all others. Some fish are even capable of changing sexes if they are all of the same sex. You will have to search the info according to what fish you are talking about.

All fish are different and their sex is determined in different ways i.e

Male guppies have longer, prettier tales where as the females have shorter tales.

In tetra's the sex is defined by the neon stripes.

Depends on what species, some you can tell the differnce by size shape or colour some you cant.

Try a web search using the name of the species you want to try, or pose another question using the name of the species

I think fish are often like birds as in the prettier, brighter, flashier ones are the males. they have to be that way because the females have class and taste and are picky. they want the best looking, healthies fathers for their babies. but really, maybe wherever you purchase your fish would be a good souce of information.

There's no quick answer to this question. There are hundreds of species that are commonly available and sexual identification varies according to species or groups of species. A more useful way of posing the question would be "How can you tell what sex Swordtails are?" or "How can you tell what sex Zebra Danios are". james
