I was in bed with my wife during the Summer and observed a strange phenomenen. Around 11.00 pm, a ball of blue light about the size of a soccer ball entered our bedroom. It floated over the end of the bed, hovered for about 30 seconds and then seemed to slowly fade into our sliderobe presses. My wife also noticed this. The strange sphere appeared to be lit from the inside. This happened on a particularly hot evening, mid Summer. I am told that this may relate to 'ball lighthening' and has been observed by other pepole. Any ideas?

thats pretty neat! I would probably have thought it was my deceased grandma playing tricks on us!
Actually I looked up ball lightening and it is possible.

''Ball lightnings often enter houses through screens or chimneys. Sometimes they are reported to enter houses through glass window panes. They are also reported to originate within buildings, on occasion from telephones. Ball lightnings can exist in an all-metal enclosure such as the interior of an airplane (Uman, 1968). ''

In all likelihood, it was ball lightening. It's a very unsettling phenomenon for people who see it, and it probably explains away things like ghosts, UFOs, and flying pigs.

If you're in the UK, and have access to the National Geographic channel, there was a programme on telly a few days ago about lightening. They often repeat programming, so check the Radio Times for next week to see if it's showing again. It's a very interesting account, both personal and scientific, about all forms of lightening around the world.

That would sound like ball lightening, which is indeed a strange phenomenon. Since it's supposed to be a collection of charged ions, did you experience any tingling sensations, much like the effect of static electricity? Ball lightening is more common during the hot and dry summers in the Midwest. Other than that, I don't know much about it.

My first thought when I saw the words blue ball: It was a ghost. To be precise it was the ghost of the planet Pluto. (Yes I know Pluto still exists, but the planet Pluto doesn't).

Your 'ball lightening' sounds very interesting. I've never heard of it before, but other people are saying it fits in with that, so that's probably correct.
