As the lightening reaches into the sky, it is moving the surrounding air. The rolling thunder as you call it is the continuance of the air moving away from the lightening causing a sonic boom until the lightening stops raising. For every 5 seconds from the time you see the lightening, until you hear the thunder is a distance of approximately 1 mile, the speed of sound. You can use this method to tell how far away the storm is and wether or not it is coming toward you or away from you. The lightening is the charged particles of air grounding to the earth. Hope this helps you get that A+ on your homework.

As the storm cloud builds, it generates static electricity ... just like you, your socks and the carpeting in your house. When the charge builds up, it has to release making a lightning bolt. As the lightning bolt burns through the cloud, it literally cuts a hole in the air. When the air slams back together, it makes a sound. Since the lightning comes from high up in the cloud and goes to the ground, that's a long path that has been "unzipped" and is now slamming back together ... and that's the rolling sound of the thunder clap.
