I'm curious to see whether everyone went for the traditional jobs associated with English or steered right off, as I've got no clue what I want to do (apart from the area) and am in my second year.

I'd do what ever if i was you, know that the world will take you places, your not guaranteed a certain type of job because you have a certian type of degree, consider your degree to be a learning curve and time to grow, i Did a fine art degree and now i sell life cover 9-5, and i cant grumble at all.

I went to China for two years and taught English. Then I came back did an MA and am now an English Languge lecturer at a university. Fairly traditional I suppose but I enjoy the job. I never planned to be a teacher at the beginning though! I just didn't want to work in an office as a 9-5 worker.

Well, I studied French alongside English, so when I left Uni I travelled round Europe for a bit teaching those languages and learning a couple more. Now (3 years later) I'm in Advertising - and I have to use well-crafted English (if not French) every day writing tv scripts, radio ads & press ads. A lot of people say English is a waste of time but if you love to play with words then a whole heap of careers are open to you - I'd suggest experimenting a bit first, though, trying a couple of things out before settling into any kind of serious job.

I ended up taking a job with the federal government. I worked 23 years and hated about 16 years of it. When I retired, I immediately started substitute teaching, and then to tutoring English at the local community college and volunteering to teach English to foreigners. I'm having a ball, but not earning much money.

I didn't study English myself, but a good friend did and she's now working in the editorial department of a major educational publisher.
