I have seen cases where the winning answer, by vote, is simply wrong. In science and mathematiics (my area) , there are capable people who are probably willing th check a voted answer for accuracy. If an answer is incorrect, a tip could be given and the question reopened. Getting points with wrong answer is bad.

I don't think voting for the best answer is a good procedure....because you can learn from all the answers

Others here have already said this, so I'll just repeat it for emphasis: when the person who asks the question doesn't respond, the question goes to the general vote, and there is no doubt nearly all of those votes are decided by people voting for themselves with duplicate IDs. So, I say get rid of this vote.

Letting the asker make the pick is generally okay, although I have noticed a few times when the asker picked a Best Answer that was flat wrong! Oh well, it's their homework...

Askers do not choose the right answer all the time either. But what is a right answer when it comes to questions about politics or religion? So what you propose would only be meaningful for a fraction of questions and even then there maybe some controversy. On the other hand I don't think it is easy to find anyone to check other people's answers willingly and I don't think Yahoo wants to be in the business of refereeing the answers in this site. There is a certain amount of uncertainity in our lives and I don't think it is realistic to expect more form Yahoo Answers. After all even scientific journals with excellent reputations publish erronous articles every once in a while.

I think a vote by the person who asked the question would be good.

This way, only questions that were indeed helpful would be selected as the best answer, and not some irrelevant answers that might have been voted by others who were trying to be funny.

I agree with you - getting points for a WRONG answer is indeed undesirable, and this defeats the whole purpose in asking the question and allowing people to provide answers to it.

For me, i would appreciate, if there was an option of being notified when you've given a wrong answer. I wouldn't mind even if it meant i had to forfeit the points i obtained from answering that question.

In doing so, not only do others not learn the wrong things, we're also able to correct ourselves.

Since there is not yet a board of experts to check out, voting for the best answer is a good idea in the short-run. I think that questions should re-open even after voting to get perhaps better answers.

Yes. Some people just don't bother to award the 10 points after they get their answers. Voting for best answers keeps the deadbeats from ruining the fun. The only instace I have found that it it not good is when someone has 7 different ID's and they vote their own answers as best. I saw a profile of someone who had 23,000 points and had answered less than 300 questions. After checking it out, each one of her answers had 7 thumbs ups.

No. May be by a committee of experts in relevant fields.

Choosing the best answer by asker ( currently done) Is no good in most cases since the asker has no or little idea about the subject except a few.

Allowing the public to vote is no good because we don't know who is voting. Some may vote at random and some may vote irresponsibly etc

So expert voting may be the good

I think the idea of voting for the best answer is one of the reasons we keep coming back, its reassurance. Every one wants to be validated, and to be told we did some thing good. Even if you don't necessarily agree with the answer, the one asking the question could see things in a different light. You say to-mato I say toma-to....

Voting is not the best solution because you can just go in and vote for yourself. If no one else votes, you win. If you look at the votes/percentages breakdowns on some resolved questions this seems to happen pretty regularly (votes 1/ percent 100). Also, when there is a tie, the question can go unresolved for months.

I agree. An incorrect answer should never be given points for being the best answer. However, comments are available, also. Perhaps those should be used to point out obvious mistakes. I doubt that Yahoo wants to get involved in adjudicating conflicts.
