You have to ask yourself a few questions first:

Do you know what it is you want to study? Science? Liberal Arts?

Where do you want to study (geographic location)? Which part of the country? Do you prefer a big city or a small village?

Do you want to study at a big university? A small college?

Are you looking for a college that is highly selective?

Do you want a university with a particular religious affiliation?

Do you want to go to a women's college or co-ed school?

Private or public?

Start with summing up what you want in a college and then try to find a college that fits your wish list.

What I did was researched what colleges and/or universities offered the program I wanted. I looked at tuition costs, location, help available, what facilities they had (like librabry, dorms, cafeteria, daycare, etc.), if finacial aid was available, class sizes, graduation rate, and employment rate after graduation. It helps too if you have family in the area of the college. My sister is also attending the college that I am at and having her there really helps a lot. She gave me a tour and helped me get set up with financial aid.

Maybe you should go over to a bookstore like Borders/Barns and Noble and in the college section there are books about the different colleges all accross the country. (In the college prep section) That way you can get an overview of all the different colleges and what they offer and see which one best fits you and your needs.

I know people don't want to hear this answer but go to a community college for two years and transfer. You get the same education and it is SO much cheaper. I did it and managed to avoid student loans all together. You will save thousands of dollars.
