Start with your county for a business license and they'll direct you to other licenses that you need. Consult an attorney and accountant (tax deductible) and get a business plan to fill in forgotten details. Make sure you get a Tax ID from city, state and federal government because you'll get sweet tax credits for expenses instead of paying out of pocket thus increasing your income. The SBA and SCORE offers free counseling to entrepreneurs.

Have a business license
Have your company bonded (will determine how much work you can do)
Make sure you have workmans comp for employees

A couple of organization that could be helpful
AGC (Associated General Contractors)
ABC (American Builders Contractors)

Both this agencies - if you are a member has reduced insurance rates - safety programs (which help workmans comp) and a multitude of other info - including the ability to network

If you are a home builder there are organizations that specific in that area - the ones above are primarily for commerical

Good Luck

It depends on the local laws governing in your state or city; The best way is to contact local library or local town hall to get upto date information.

Where are you based? US or UK?
