Not a bad Question....and it is difficult to explain if one does not understand grammer.

It is because the "Leaf" is not pluralized....the team name is...get it?....

they are referring to more than member, not more than one leaf.

for instance....they used to play at Maple Leaf Gardens....not Maple Leafs Gardens. Or, The team is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment ltd...not maple leafs sports...

it is common to add an "s" at the end of team names. Someone earlier mentioned the flyers....same idea...

pick up a canadian press handbook and it will be explained on a much more technical level...

It is called "The Toronto Maple Leafs", not Leaves, because in the war, there was an elite group of Canadian soldiers called the "Leafs" not leaves, for some odd reason. Thus, the team name is based on the elite soldiers, not the leaves themselves.

If it were "Toronto Maple Leaves" - it's past tense for the "Maple in Toronto is leaving or departing". And....each player is considered an individual "Maple Leaf" of the team (a whole tree/team of Leafs).
It sounds screwy but who cares? I love 'em.

its simple. Leaves has two meaning and tw o pronounciations. Leafs and Leaves. It makes more sense to spell it Leafs so not to confuse people. You dont want people asking why is the team leaving? Or why did the team Leave? get it?

Because "Syrups" was taken by a local synchronized chess team. Blame Conn Smythe for his inability to use grammar correctly and his obsession with army units also of the same ilk.

The bigger question is: Do the "Leafs" all freeze in winter in T.O. as why is the logo colored Protestant blue? Last I looked, leaves turn brown, red and maybe yellow in fall and winter.

To give us a unique name. Here is hoping that for once we will win the Stanley Cup now that Pat Quinn is gone. I am from Toronto and a Leaf fan.
