Quoting from the Urban Legends site: Gore was assigned a position as reporter covering the activities of the 20th Engineer Brigade in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. Obviously, this was a non-combat position, and some of those who served with Gore reported that their superiors requested Gore "should cover only military operations where security was good." However, they also reported that Gore had not asked for any such arrangement, nor was he aware of it

Yes, he did. He went to Vietnam, also. But as the son of a prominent racist Senator, he was afforded special protections. [I actually do not disagree with doing this - the propaganda effect of capturing a son of a current leader is very great]

But even then, he managed to cut short his tour by using the rule that a soldier could be discharged if they chose to attend seminary school [i.e. studying for a religious vocation]. This is what he did, going to Vanderbilt. But, according to his roommate, he spend his time getting high, getting laid and skipping class, thus flunking out. So, it is painfully obvious he took this route not for serious religious study, but to run away from his committment.

So, yes, he did serve, but not with what you'd call distinction.
