What is so dangerous in it ? What is what the authorities find so "threatening"?

It is said that "Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling, it is challenged for its focus on wizardry and magic." But that is not an answer to my question!

Funny how the Christian Church, which wouldn't be around in the modern day had it not evolved from assimilated pagans in Constantine's empire, should have such a problem with wizardry and magic. After all, it's because of pagan tradition that we celebrate the birth of Christ near the Winter Solstice rather than His actual birthday and decorate trees as a nod to their former role in the spiritual connection of man with nature. The truth is, anytime a group of people has power, it fears change -- especially in its youth. When its youth start believing the views of others or Heaven forbid, start thinking for themselves, then that group may lose their foothold on their accumulated power and influence. Harry Potter and hundreds of other challenged and banned titles are just books -- mere collections of words with the purpose to entertain. If anyone's threatened by that affecting their children's minds and behavior, then they've got bigger problems than the fantastical adventures of an awkward teen just trying to make it through class without getting killed by Voldemort. Maybe they should educate their children on the thought process and reasoning which leads them to believe in what is right and wrong (presuming that they understand it themselves, of course) rather than universally denouncing certain literature as evil.

I'm a Christian and I lovetheHarry Potter series. But then, having studied Paganism as part of my Religious Studies degree, I know witchcraft and wicca etc is not evil! My best friend is a witch, and I assure you she does not have a magic wand, ride a broomstick or produce a patronus!
I know many evangelical Christians who think Harry Potter is evil. They have never read the books and will never do so. I think they're missing the point completely.
More moderate Christians do not find the books offensive in any way. A Church of England building was used in at least one of the films.

As far as I know, it's only challenged by the uber-religious. Somewhere in the Bible, witchcraft, wizardry, and the like are banned, so the fact that Harry Potter is devoted to said subjects makes it 'extremely dangerous'. Nevermind that we know you can't do magic like that. So basically, those that take a literal interpretation to the Bible and feel that everyone else needs to take a literal interpretation of the Bible get all in a huff, and as they are quite good at being loud and getting what they want (Republican party, anyone?) they challege the book and call it Satanic, etc. Think modern-day Puritans.

Religion again showing it's very ugly head. If these books are so bad then why did they wait until they all were in the stores. Why didn't they do this when the first one came out.

Don't let it bother you very much because their actions will increase the sales and the author will just get richer and laugh at them.

I remember several books that were actually banned that had been considered not very good sellers and once the ban hit they sold like hotcakes. The Churches seem to always get things wrong. They sure cause a lot of problems on the Way though.

Stricter Christian practitioners believe the focus on wizardry and witchcraft are dangerous, especially in a book that might attract children. They believe an interest in anything that might stem from or attract children to satanism is unacceptable.

The really dangerous thing is that if every narrow minded point of view is taken into account we will have precious few books to read at all.

There have always been stories about magic and wizards, many legends are based on these stories. The people that find the books threatening seem to have lost their sense of proportion and forgotten their own childhoods. (unless they were themselves deprived of stories) These people seem to think that children will believe in magic and wizardry and forget about God and 'good Christian values'. If children are taught to appreciate literature and are brought up in caring homes whatever religion then books like these can only add to their lives.

Harry Potter is a challenged book by fundamentalists who believe anything refering to magic is a danger to the welfare of their children. They think magic, wizards, and witches are evil, basically. Totally illogical, of course. But they do not think logically to begin with. Even if they do not want their own children reading stories like these, they have no right to restrict others from having access to these books.

Some parents think that, if their kids read Harry Potter, they will get interested in Wiccan and Paganism. Wiccan is related to witchcraft and many people think that Wiccans are "bad" or "evil." However, that is not true. Most kids don't even know what Wiccan is and they just like the book because it's about an ordinary kid who finds out he can do extraordinary things. Fantasy books are very popular these days.
