i think it is a ploy, a publicity stunt, to sell more of them. They are just shoddy little kids books, and I dont think that the christian rightwingers got the political capital they wanted by making a deal over it.

I suppose you're referring to certain officials in the catholic church getting in a snit about it. You will notice that in most fantasy books before Harry Potter, or at least the "classics", (ie the lord of the rings, the chronicles of narnia, etc) often there in not a lot of magic involved and it is usually portrayed as "bad" (soroman in lotr, the white witch in the lion the witch and the wardrobe, etc.) and many times teaching authorities in the church can find an almost mirroring of christian teachings in these books. When Harry Potter originally came out, people didn't get too worked up about it, but as Harry started to mature and began to discover the darkness inside himself, some catholics began to question whether the books was trying to say that everyone has some evil in them, and similar messages. They were also concerned that easily influenced children who read the book would think that magic was something they should practice, and since many of the conservative catholics think that the wiccan religion promotes worship of the devil, they were worried about their youth. That is why in many predominately catholic towns and some catholic schools the books have been removed. I personally, love the Harry Potter books, and the pope has not actually said that they are bad, just people who have independant ideas from him think so and are trying to say the pope agrees with them. Most of the people who don't allow their children to read the books are just missinformed, repeating what other people have told them the pope believes when the pope has actually said no such thing. I actually believe that the Harry Potter books promote a lot of christian morals and doctrines, like good over evil, using your strenghts to help others, and recognizing the darkness within you and battling against it. I don't know if this is precisely what you were asking, but that is why many catholics in my neighborhood are against the Harry Potter books and believe them to be a bad influence on their children.

The 'authorities' as such don't find the books threatening, but certain religious organisations do, as they think that Harry Potter will encourage children to get into witchcraft, the occult and so on, which they disapprove of.

These fears aren't completely unfounded - there are loads of books out there encouraging adolescents to get involved with things like Wicca and Yoga which are seen as cultish and even evil by some (especially fundamentalist Christians).

Even though Harry Potter is clearly fantasy, you can see that it might encourage some children to get involved with "real" magic. So yeah, it's basically a Christian thing - remember they used to burn witches...

i'm a Christian and that i lovetheHarry Potter sequence. yet then, having studied Paganism as area of my non secular study degree, i comprehend witchcraft and wicca etc isn't evil! My astounding buddy is a witch, and that i assure you she does no longer have a magic wand, holiday a broomstick or produce a patronus! i comprehend many evangelical Christians who imagine Harry Potter is evil. they have in no way study the books and could in no way income this. i imagine they are lacking the point thoroughly. better lifelike Christians do no longer locate the books offensive in any respect. A Church of england construction changed into used in a minimum of between the videos.

i belive it is because some christian groups figure that it has a influence on youth. But if any of these people who challenge this books actually read them they would get the idea of the book and that it isn't only centered around magic. it is a story about a boys life who found relief and friends and opposition in becoming a wizard.

JK Rowling is a self-professed Episcopalian Christian who has been quoted as saying that she looks up to CS Lewis (who wrote overtly Christian literature posing as children's fantasy fiction) as a genius.

The morals and messages of the Harry Potter books are that love, decency, consideration and self-sacrifice are ideals that we should all strive for. Egotism, selfishness, oppression, abuse of power and bigotry are emphatically portrayed as wrong.

Maybe that's why religious fundamentalists find the books threatening...

It's not that there's anything threatening in it per se, it's that certain religious groups are offended by the use of magic in the book and feel as though the books are giving children wrong ideas

It is because of certain fundamentalist christian groups many in the US who believe that since the books talk about magic and witches that they must be satanically motivated.

Which if you actually read the books (novel notion, many members of the above groups appear to be illiterate) is a complete laugh because the thematic strains of Good, Love and Self-Sacrifice in the protection of others, along with the idea that to commit murder is equivalent to destroying one's soul, are the REAL IDEAS expressed in the books.

You need to ask exactly who decided this- your source in other words. The Bible would most likely be on some list of "bad" books too- depending on who is deciding what is "bad". It boils down to an opinion and a viewpoint.
