No he did not exist. Some of the characters in the movie did truly exist, Marcus Aurelius and Commodus were actually emperors and father and son. Wars against the Germans wre being fought at that time. Commodus even did fight in gladitorial combat, however the gladiators he fought always let him win and their lives were spared. The majority of the story is false though it does a nice job of reflecting what Roman life was like at the peak of the empire before it began its decline, which some historians claim was started by Commodus.

Fascinating thing about fiction, it is a tale believably told. Many things about the film were meticulously correct, much of the open battle scene and much about normal life were square on.

There may have been such a general and he may have had such a demise, but not necessarily this general in this demise at this time, as depicted in the film.

Commoditus did fight drugged or subtly injured slaves and gladiators and was killed by a slave. In that some aspects of a piece of the scifi Dune were closer (the slave where a certain person was going to copulate with was not drugged enough and turned to attack). Commoditus had a fondness for males in his intimate pleasures.

No. But emperor Commodus (played by Joaquim Phoenix) did used to show off by fighting gladiators in the Coliseum, so there is some truth behind the film.
