Groups sometimes go on a retreat. Why call it that? Are they under attack and giving up? Have so many people left the group that they can't continue on? It just seems like an odd word to use. Why not call it a session, or sabbatical, or even a pow-wow?

Because at these "retreats" at some point you inevitably retreat to a closet and bang your head on the wall, bemoaning the fact you are spending a perfectly good weekend with a bunch of tools.

Serious answer: the group is supposed to be "retreating" into themselves to fully concentrate on the matters at hand...
