welll, tom had many problems, one was that he was borderline crazy i think, but that was pretty obvious even to those two. I guess the secret you are looking for was the jim had been freed and was no longer a runaway slave.

Tom knows that Jim has been freed and may return to his family in Hannibal, Missouri. But he doesn't tell anyone, for Tom the showman who's always planning some big, heroic adventure wants to stage an "escape" for Jim. From Huck's point of view, who has learned to accept Jim as a brother ("All right, I'll go to hell," he has said, rather than treat Jim as a runaway slave and endanger his freedom.), this is hard to forgive.

From the reader's point of view, it's hard to forgive Mark Twain the last one-fifth of the novel. It reverts to the kind of popular humor that made Tom Sawyer such a success. But it's hardly true to the novel that Huckleberry Finn has become with Huck and Jim fleeing down the river. Tom gets his idea of heroism from the old school, tales of knights and pirates and high adventurers--booklearning, in other words. That's one of the features of "sivilization" that Huck decides to abandon at the end of the novel, when he decides to head out west.

Tom has used his secret to endanger Jim's life and threaten the respectful relationship he and Huck have developed, all for the sake of playing the hero himself. That's the high adventure of "sivilization," but it ain't for Huck!
