Because "Circus" means round. A circus is not always a animal & people show.

Because there is a round central island in the road and way back before the volume of traffic was so high, cars etc went around the CIRCUS.(Circuit).
In a real Circus the action goes on inside the ring which is like an an island with the seating all around it.
Manchester has one as well and it to is called Piccadilly.

Because they used to be round spaces Piccadilly still is. Comes from same root as circular and where a circus with acts in it gets its name because it traditionally has a round rink
