Is it just me, or is it that in every movie that a character orders a meal, you don't actually see that character eat? Or they get up and leave before the food comes? And whenever you see a character eat, you never see them order? Are there any exceptions?

the problem with eating and filming is if you have to do multiple takes, by the time the director is satisfied with what they've shot, the actor may have already consumed too much food. so generally, the focus isn't supposed to be on the meal, it's supposed to be on the character development or the storyline or whatever is being supported by that particular scene.

Another challenge with eating and filming is continuity. That is making sure that if a character is holding a can of coke in one scene, that they're still holding it in another. They can get away with subtle things, but there's always someone that can pick that stuff out.

My mom and I have been paying attention to that since I was a kid.
Often the actor will sit with a full plate in front of them, and only move the food around.
The only exception is when the scene requires the actor to take a bite or a sip, and even then it's a small one.
My mom always jokes and says it's their way of saving money, but I think it's just to avoid the make up getting messed up, or something getting stuck in the actors teeth.
Also, fluent dialog is impossible, if the actor has to stop and finish chewing something first.
But yes, you're right, sometimes they do leave, even before the meal arrives, and sometimes without paying!

I hate when they show a character with a soda from the side view and they are holding it then they show a front view and it is beside them on the table... ugh.... very noticeable in the movie Jawbreakers when they are in the cafeteria and the blond girl has a diet coke or something... drives me crazy

GREAT Q!

Havent you ever seen American Pie? In the movie they go to a hot dog joint and they eat a ton of hot dogs. If you watch the making of the movie they say that they get sick of hot dogs from eating so many.

Meg Ryan ordered in "When Harry Met Sally". Jack Nicholson ordered in one of his earlier films as well. Both hilarious.

not sure. i think the reason they dont eat is because the actors have to do multiple takes, and if you eat a bunch of food each take you're going to get sick. usually, if they actually eat on screen, they spit it into a napkin between takes or when the camera's not on them. the thing you almost never see actors do is actually swallow their food. it usually switches between camera angles before they swallow.
