I have. After becoming unemployed for 2 months due to a layoff, I got way behind on my credit card bills. I maintained my mortgage and monthly untility bills, and let the credit cards slide. Boy did they raise cain! I closed my account and told them of my unemployment. One company didn't care and demanded payment, at 29.9%APR ....at an amount that was way more than one of my biweekly take home pay with the new job. I found an Credit Counseling agency who was able to take on the $18,000 balance and refinanced it at 6% APR and a much better monthly payment amount. The DMP (debt management plan) goes on your credit report, but it's much more favorable than a collection agency or bankruptcy. You can go to their website at www.novadebt.com and talk with one of their certified counselors to see if they can do something for you. The counseling is free. If you take on a DMP with them, they have a small monthly fee to handle your payments for you. Mine's is only a mere $15 a month! Just Google Credit Counseling, and you'll find loads of agencies that can help.

I practice really hard on keeping my credit card debt down to a minimum. I have three credit cards, two master cards and one visa, the total debt on all three combined is less than $800, I pay $100 a month on all three. I have learned the bad credit lesson. In fact, I just wrote them out this morning.
