Because in this context the prefix extra describes something being outside or greater than. Outside-of-ordinary, or greater-than-ordinary.
Does that help?

Oh, not these days. 'Awesome' is the new word ...even if it isn't.

A TV interviewer responded with 'That's amazing' and 'Oh, fantastic' to a some so-called 'pop star' a couple of years back.

Now she'd could save all that energy by just muttering 'Awesome' instead (save global pollution too).

Our ridiculous language. Why if something is very flammable is it inflammable, when the 'in' prefix in front of any other word means the opposite?? INvisible, INordinate etc. etc.

Because of the word extra, it gives it a whole new meaning, far from the base word

Same as terrestials and extraterrestials. We are ordinary while they are extraordinary.
