I'm writing an article, it's somewhat informal though and I need a decent expletive (that would be fit to print.) Would "blech" be okay? I have heard "blech" but don't know the correct spelling or the connotation -- and can't find it in a dictionary. how about blah, bleh, ick, ugh, ... are any of these okay? any others? thank you!

Mathew, I have some experience as a reporter/journalist and I would definitely discourage you from using blech or yucky. I'm not sure what your article is on, but I would suggest even straying away from words like "gross" or "nasty"--even if the article is informal, you want it to have a somewhat professional tone. My suggestion would be to try:
-Grotesque
-Unpleasant
-Disgusting
-Rotten

Or try using a thesaurus.

Also, don't forget if your article is not a commentary piece, avoid "editorializing" or adding your opinion, it draws away from your other sources and turns your article from a news or informative piece to something else your editor will most likely not enjoy.

Gross, grotesque, disgusting, nauseating, sickening...or in a sentence, "It made me want to retch, hurl, puke, etc...." Give us a little more info. I don't like "blech"; it's vague.

Politely, 'yucky' means distasteful or disgusting.
'belch' is a proper word, so it is OK to use.
