My 2000 S10's check engine light has been on for a while, despite me flashing the OBDII system a couple times. The shop cant bring up the code, and no change in engine charachteristics so I didnt worry about it. I usually get gas every day (I drive over 100 miles a day), but if I dont go for a day or two, when I take the gas cap off, air whooshes out of the tank. I dont know why though. It is lowered and I did check the underbody for tank punctures or damaged lines and didnt find anything, as everything is set above the frame rails and shouldnt have hit the ground at any point. Emmission test coming up, they wont let you test with a check engine light on, and they know if you flashed the computer before you came. Thanks for any help!

The gas cap is the factory one, I never changed it. No codes pull up on OBDII readers, I've taken it to 3 different places, no one can get the code, and Chevy doesnt have a built in diagnostic display like Dodge does

a 2000 S10's fuel system is pressurized. The EVAP system monitors the pressue and if it detects a variance in the pressure it will turn on your check engine light, but you will not notice any change in the way the car acts or drives. When ever you get gas, don't let the vehicle run while doing so. Make sure that the little black oring seal around the gascap is not twisted and most importantly make sure that when you tighten it back on that you hear at least a couple of clicks. The whooshing noise you hear is normal, like I said it is a pressurized system. If it is a leaky EVAP system, first like the rest said get another gas cap, if the problem persists take it to a dealer they can do what is called a smoke test to determine where your pressure leak is at. Good luck.

Try replacing the gas cap. No cap should seal so tightly that you hear air rushing into the tank when you remove the cap. As an auto mechanic I have seen a bad gas cap cause the 'check engine' light to come on plenty of times because it does not seal properly and will set a code because of that. It,s an easy and inexpensive place to start. Good luck.

The air in your tank is vacuum,it suppose to do that. How many miles does the truck have on it.Hay,disconnect your negative cable on you battery, and let the truck stay disconnect from battery for 5 minutes. Then reconnect battery. The light should be out.Drive your truck as you normally wood.If the light comes back on,have a shop run the codes on it and ask for a print out. That way you have the codes, and all you need to do then is replace the bad part that corresponds with bad code.

Most aftermarket gas caps are not vented which will cause this concern.Go to your local dealer and purchase a GM gas cap. As for the light, what code are you getting?

That is normal. When you run low on gas it just does it. Mine, my mom, my husband, everyone I know does it. It has nothing to do with your check engine light.
I have had to take my car to the Auto Zone ( A local Parts store) and they put it on the machine and located the code. I bought the part and fixed it.
My problem was a censor.
