There are lots of ways one can be "monitored."
1. Keystroke loggers. Someone can secretly put software on your computer that "logs" every keystroke. Likewise, they can also put a device in your keyboard. If they're good, the reports are sent somewhere. You'll never know this is happening unless you download software and tear apart your keyboard. The cops love this one.
2. Variation of #1 - some viruses log keystrokes and send the logs back to the "mothership" in order to get passwords and credit card numbers.
3. You could have some bug that allows people to do remote monitoring - the old Back Orifice software was the best example. Not likely.
4. Someone inside of your network could be listening in via a program like Ethereal, etc. Basically a computer intercepts your network / internet transmissions, and records them as they go by. Sometimes they can simply evesdrop w/o being in the middle.
5. Variation on #4 - are you using wireless? If you're using wireless, and like 90% of the population, you've not enabled encryption, which means that someone could find out what you're doing, especially if they have a keystroke logger.
6. The password suggestions are great. The most common password is "password" -- and that's the first guess. Use something like AdAfe@459Cs - in other words, something they couldn't guess, has upper- and lower-case letters as well as symbols and numbers. If you have doubts, change all your passwords to that "strong" password we just talked about.
7. If you've got XP, then make sure that firewall is running. Then make sure you've got current antivirus (don't install the firewall from the AV company if you've got XP's firewall, or at least disable it after you're sure all is well).
Those are my quickie suggestions.

There is no possibility of remotely log on to your computer while you are working, because windows remote desktop will log you off immedietely while the other person logs in your computer.
If you get logged off in between your works, then make sure, somebody has remotely logged in.
In the System Properties (Right Click My Computer - Properties)
You can see REMOTE . Uncheck both the Options, if it is checked.
There are softwares that are used to see the dektop of your PC from other PC. This can work only if the software is installed on Both the PC's. So make sure no softwares that you dont know are installed in your PC.
A firewall is a Best Option...Bit Defender or any other, Even you can enable the Windows Firewall If your are using win XP SP2 or higher Windows Versions.
Cheers !!!!

If someone remotely connected to your PC, you SHOULD know it.
You can log them off if they are logged on by rebooting the PC, but they will just re-connect once the PC is back up.
It sounds like you are being paranoid.
If your computer is being monitored by your IT department, then there is nothing you can do about it. Is this a School or Work computer? MOst School and Work computers are monitored 24/7 for good reasons. To keep employees and students from doing things they should NOT be doing.

If you suspect that ur PC is been monitored by some one change ur passwords immediately.
Keep them long , as far as possible. This will be harder for the person to hack it.
If you still suspect that the activity is still going on keep changing ur passwords every day & finally the hacker will give it up.
Try installing a firewall if you are comfortable installing it.There are many firewalls available on the Net for free.
Even i had the same problem. My gmail account wasn't opening. One friend of mine told me that my mail was hacked so i changed the password twice.
So far till now i don't have any problems. If you take some action please do let me know what it is ????
It may be helpful to someone else also !!!!!!

Change all account passwords and disable any open accounts that aren't being used on your computer. If you have Windows XP, turn on your Windows Firewall. That will more than likely take care of the problem.

Change your password first and make it complicated. Install a firewall. Stay away from unfiltered email. I had it happen to me on my first computer. They hack in from other countries. Avoid leaving too much personal information on your hard drive. Install an anti-spy-ware utility.
