Because they don't know or trust God, but they trust someone or things that are far less then God.

Some people do believe in it. An aquaintence of mine's mother is obsessed with psychics. She turns to them for advice about everything. If you are interested, I recommend a book called Psychic Junkie by Sarah Lassez. It tells the story of an up and coming actress who becomes addicted to calling psychics on the phone.

We all have a bit of psychic power in us. Its just stronger in others because they work at it. Has the phone ever rang and you know who is calling? Or have you ever talked to some one and knew some thing wasn't right? Those are forms of being psychics. Most of the time we go to some one because its easier to be told what is going on than to trust your own instinct. And some times we are afraid of the truth.

People go to psychics for the same reason they go to therapists. To clarify issues in their life.

I think people really believe them, especially if they are depressed or sad/worried about something. They will look for comfort in just about anyway with or without proof. Unfortunately there are a lot of charlatans out there willing to take advantage of them.

I am a 'psychic' and a lot of people think that people who give readings are just out to gain a quick buck, but not all psychics are frauds. I know that there are some out there and I understand why people have that misconception. (I personally would never trust a telephone service of psychics... sounds shady!) However, a lot of psychic readers are really just out there to help people. Most psychics who are really good at what they do believe/know that their abilities are a gift from God. They believe that the information they relay to the person being reader for (the 'querent') is coming THROUGH them, not FROM them. They believe it all comes from a Higher Source and they are just a channel for whatever the querent needs to hear at that point in time. Not only that, but there are plenty of readers out there who don't change a penny for their service because they just want to help out.
There are plenty of benefits to getting psychic readings. I read Tarot so I can only offer information about that specifically. But, Tarot does not 'tell your future' quite in the way that people think and expect it to. NOTHING you hear in a reading is set in stone and everything is changeable if the querent takes action to change what has been foretold. However, in most cases readings center around the present. Most people who come to me usually need help making a decision about something. To which my first response usually is "follow what your heart is telling you" - to which they respond, "I don't know what its telling me!"
Tarot can help you to understand what you REALLY wanted all along. Tarot tends to point out the person what they already know but refused or wouldn't allow themselves to see on their own. Tarot shows you what you NEED to know, not what you WANT to know. Sometimes it can be a like a cosmic slap in the face, LOL.
Tarot can help a person to understand themselves better by pointing out events in their past that led them to act and behave the way they do now. (Usually destructively in some way.) By identifying this issues it allows them to take steps to recover and change to become a better person.
It can and does oftentimes give hints about the future, but usually it is more or less a warning of what will happen if they don't get their life in order. Sometimes it is specific, but more frequently it's not.
And finally, many people come to readers for reassurance. They may have just gotten divorced, lost a loved one, or are just at a real low point in their life. Oftentimes a reading makes the person feel like a weight has been lifted from their chest, like there is a light at the end of the tunnel...
In any case, yes they DO believe in psychics because REAL psychics are messengers of God. Although, we are only human -- our 'puny mortal brains' are capable of making mistakes when interpreting the information that is channeled through us. So if a psychic isn't right on task, don't freak out. We are just human like everyone else!
Blessings and Light!

Mostly I think for fun to see what it will say. A few may take pyschics, astrology and palm reading seriously as well as medical quackery.
