Ganguly was the best captain. He made a turnaround of Indian cricket. He would support his boys, and the result can be seen.

I think that Arjuna Ranatunga is the best ever captain in the history of cricket. Because, the team that he played for, wasn´t a good team at all. But, he tried hard and got his team into a new level. He was a very aggressive captain, who will always look for aggression. He was also very attacking player, and the captain, as well. He especially worked on his team´s batting department. He made Sanath Jayasuriya & Romesh Kaluwitharana a very attacking opening-pair. Jayasuriya slowly became a nightmare for all the bowlers. I think Jayasuriya was the 1st man in the history of cricket who started to make a use out of 1st 15 overs fielding-restriction. Because, Viv Richards was also a very attacking player but, he had also batted in the middle-order, in his whole career. Then, Arvinda De Silva was also starting to arise in the international cricket. Then, they also had a very strong middle-order, with Ranatunga himself and De Silva and also Asanka Gurusinha. Only then, they had a strong team, and the same team led them to a victory in the World-Cup of 1996.

And remember: Sri-Lanka played their 1st ODI match in year 1975. And they got the Test status in year 1981. Far later than Pakistan or India.

Rawal.

Hey! Why are you all naming Ricky Ponting? How is he a good captain? Australia wins every match because they have good talented boys, not because of their captain. You´re all naming the captain who let the other team chase a manmouth total of 434. New-Zealand also chased down 331, last year. Even the teams like Somerset chased down 345 against Australia (last year, in England). He can´t keep his mouth shut, he has no respect for the umpires. Click here, at: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/content/image/211216.html to see a photo of Ricky Ponting surrendering in front of the crowd, after they lost the match against a county team (Somerset). Against South-Africa, he needed to lead by an example. But he bowled full 10 overs quota with the bowler (Lewis) who went for 114 runs (a world-record). Against Somerset he bowled 8 overs with Kasprowicz, and what heppened? He went for 89 runs.

So, there it shows how good captain Ricky Ponting is.

Adam Gilchrist is Australia's and thus the world's best captain, however with the workload of wicket keeping he may end up retiring with that facet of his game being kept mostly unknown

I think Stephen Fleming of New Zealand.

Ricky P doesn't really display any tactical brilliance or ingenuity, he is lucky to be surrounded by such talent that they win a lot of games.

The subcontinent teams may be competitive on their home soil, but none of them (or their captains) have any initiative or ability to adapt to foreign turf, and hence have a terrible record away from home.

If England win the Ashes then Freedi will be the best captain.
