...buried at sea if you haven't served in the Navy? How can you be (legally) buried at sea if this is the case? Laws relevent to UK residents would be great (Only saying this because other nations might have different laws?)

I live in a place where burial at sea is commonplace, but in the UK there are some very stringent procedures to go through. You'll find everything you want on this link: www.mceu.gov.uk/mceu_local/FEPA/FEPA-BURIAL-MAIN.HTM .

I don't know about the sea, but I do know of someone given a Viking burial- burnt in a boat- on the Norfolk broads, so there can't be theoretically anything illegal with burying a body in water rather than earth, I guess you would have to get permission though as some places would be out because of tidal movement- you wouldn't want bits washing up on shore

I'm pretty sure anyone could be buried at sea. Maybe not in such a ceremonial a way as someone in the Navy would be. But if you made it your last request, family could spread your ashes just about anywhere.

You can be cremated and have your ashes spread in the ocean. I don't know how you'd get caught, I've never heard of it being illegal. There are folks' ashes spread down here in the keys all the time! As a matter of fact, there's a bunch of roses in the water right now...someone must've gotten buried out there last night or this morning! :(

International water is just that, international. I don't believe that anybody can say who can and who can't be buried at sea. Just like you can gamble in international water and which ever country you're closest too can't do anything about it. If you put it in your will, that is what they will do.

Are you seriously telling us that you want to chuck a coffin containing a body into the sea? That's what it looks like after you've said you didn't mean 'scatter the ashes' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
