El big ED, that's totally ludicrious! Anything is possible and I know for a fact it's done all the time!
You have to shore up as you dig and would probably want to consult a structural engineer before attempting it!

Dig Basement Under Existing House

2016-12-18 07:29:05 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Something is not adding up. I have never heard of a *six foot* deep footer. And I don't understand where this existing six foot concrete wall is or goes to. It seems real unlikely that the house was built with walls for a basement but no basement. Help me out here with a bit more information. One thing is for sure. If you get it wrong it won't be cheap to fix! PS, are you sure the previous owner was digging the basement Out? Was he maybe filling it in? { Along with the "evidence"? } ; )

Many answers...some not very serious.

WHY? is my question.

What might be a better option is just adding to the existing house from the ground level up.

You don't state a reason for a basement, but honestly if it's only for storage, get a shed. If it's to add living space, go UP and/or Out.

The costs are prohibitive, and the reasons often irrational.

There are construction companies that specialize in that. First you jack up the house and make sure it is supported and level through the entire lift. Then you start digging out the dirt. Of course you have to disconnect the oil, gas, electric, etc - anything that may cause fire or danger before the lift.

My folks did it w/ their 200+ cape - some of the walls cracked a bit, but overall it was quite successful.

My grandpa put a basement in the back of his house, then put rooms above the ground on top of it. He didn't actually go under the existing house.

You don't You build the basement next to the existing house and then move the house on top of it.

It's possible in theory....but no way!!! the house is already supported without the basement...trying to dig now would jeapordize the foundations integrity...Not happeneing...

i did it with buckets, took along time. you can speed it up by renting a conveyer belt to remove dirt. you have to dig out under the foundation alittle at a time , and replace it as you go. if your in a hurry, get it done profecionally, if not it's a great dailly workout. john
