Simply put. . .COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS AWESOME!!! Every week in college football there are several BIG TIME games that are very important in the national title and conference championship races. Playing games on Thursdays and also other days of the week allows the fans to see more of these great games. In reality it is also a great way for the networks. . mostly ESPN and ABC to make more money and promote their programming as well. Thursday night games are also a way to start off the college football weekend and hype the weekends games. Besides. . . . most of what is on TV these days is complete crap so you might as well have a good football game on. The NFL is crap and the games are virtually meaningless until december so lets cover more college football.

Scheduling and TV time. Schools want to get noticed. Having their games televised is an excellent form of advertising. Playing on Thursday almost guarantees that their team will be on National Television. Having a Saturday game, only guarantees a regional broadcast, due to the amount of games going on.

Ratings! Its a time slot with no sports in it and Thursday is a somewhat popular night for sports bars and such, so I'd guess this is all about just getting ratings.
