Most banks will not allow you to close it but they will allow you to freeze it from withdrawls. Unfortunatly the co-owner of the account has the authority to unfreeze it.

Tricky. You can ask your bank what they are willing to do. Depends on where the money is right now, they may be able to let you open a separate account and move that money the moment it becomes available. (Most likely it is already available. They are just holding onto it). The bank hates to lose customers with large sum of money. I bet they will work with you. Just say it was personal fund and you never meant to put in the joint account or something. You can also ask them to freeze the account saying you have misplaced your checkbook or something. Large bank will accommodate you in many ways. When you talk to them, don't sound panicky or they may get suspicious (like you are trying to steal from your husband). Don't tell the teller the details. Talk to a senior person.

I believe so, yes. Most times, the bank will allow you to leave the account open for deposists for a period of time (1-2 weeks), but will close it from withdrawal.
I had my backpack stolen years ago with my checkbook in it, and had to close the account. This is the offer they gave me, since Direct Deposits can take some time to be re-reouted.

is the account in your name primarily - if it is you can take him off of the account - if not - closing the account won't help - because the bank will not be ablel to close the account without knowing that won't get stuck for any money/

You can't close it without his consent. How long ago did you make the deposit?
