1.) I think "queer family relationships" are an important element in daytime talk TV because people find the subject interesting as they feel it is so different from their own. Also in general people are nosy and just want to find out what goes on in other people's lives!

2.) Straight people will again tune into talk shows about queer families because it is something they are not familiar with and either will want to find out more about or just like to feel they are able to intrude into what goes on in someone else's life.

3.) I think the image of the "nuclear family" in general, whether on daytime TV or not, makes life on TV a bit rosier, a little bit easier to swallow. If in your own life relationships are breaking up and things aren't all too jolly its not very nice to then turn on the TV and have to witness the exact same thing. Its nicer just to see a typical 2.4 children scene and be able to slip into something that's not so close to reality.

Hope that helps a bit!

I think people are really fascinated with this topic because it is coming up more and more in our culture. I also think that it partially has to do with the fact that people like watching anything not functional because they can look at it and say that their lives aren't as bad as that. The nuclear family now is not a prevalent as it was in the past. There are still shows with the typical nuclear family lay out but now I think shows are showing the reality of life and even if you have the "perfect" american family your lives are not perfect.

there are several different answers to your inquiry, the most logical is that people who view themselves as socially correct find it abnormal to be outside of the box so to speak. This "queer family" would be absolutly out of the traditional box for a defenition of a family. in short people dont like or marvel at what they dont understand, and television is a means to participate without participating....

Perhaps for a look at how other people live.
The nuclear family has a role in almost every family.
I think that nuclear familys are interesting because they are something new and few families practise nuclear experiments on their kids.

If you would have used the correct terms then I would humor you.

Queer means happy and so does gay.

Homosexual is the correct term. Rephrase your question.

Myself, I watch King of Queens and that's about as queer as it gets.

The rest would fall under different strokes for different folks.

1 - "you will be WINNER?" = doubtful
2 - "why . . .?" = taboo talk is always attractive
3 - "Why . . .?" = same answer as 2
4 - "What role . . .?" = can't give an answer to this; don't have/watch tv
